University of Arizona President Suresh Garimella, Gila River Indian Community Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis, Gila River Health Care Board Chairman Robert Pablo, University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix Dean, Dr. Fredric Wondisford and other local leaders and elected officials perform the ribbon cutting at the announcement of the UA’s establishment of the nation's first MD-granting medical school branch located on the lands of a sovereign Tribal Nation in partnership with Gila River Health Care. The event took place at 4 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Gila River Resorts & Casinos in Chandler, Arizona.
