A Townsend Middle School student was struck by a school bus on East Grant Road, near Tucson Medical Center this afternoon.
The 11-year-old boy was transported to University Medical Center where he is in critical, but stable condition, Tucson Fire Department spokeswoman Trish Tracy said.
The bus, which is still at the scene, is a Tucson Unified School District bus and was transporting other Townsend Middle School students, said Sgt. James Stoutmeyer, a Tucson Police Department field supervisor.
The injured boy had not been on the bus. He was southbound in a crosswalk, crossing Grant Road and the bus was northbound and made a westbound turn onto Grant Road when it ran over the boy, Stoutmeyer said.
Westbound Grant Road is closed at Craycroft Road and traffic in the area is backed up significantly. Motorists should avoid the area.
