PHOENIX — A Civil War re-enactment that has happened annually for the last 20 years has become a casualty of the state’s budget problems.
The re-enactment at Picacho Peak State Park, about halfway between Phoenix and Tucson, is now canceled.
Arizona State Parks spokeswoman Ellen Bilbrey says the event, which was held in mid-March, costs $3,500 to stage.
Each year, about 200 people from as far away as Massachusetts came to Arizona to participate in the re-enactment, and about 3,000 spectators typically attended the event.
The re-enactment is of several of the westernmost battles of the Civil War. That includes the Battle of Picacho Pass, an April 15, 1862 skirmish that began when a Union cavalry unit encountered a Confederate scouting party.
