What better way to open a new park named for you than tossing out the opening soccer ball? Tucson's longtime Democratic congressman had that honor on Sept. 11, 1982, when he officially opened the city's Morris K. Udall Regional Center at Tanque Verde and Sabino Canyon roads. The 172-acre park included picnic and parking areas and a multi-use field. Before the site became a park, it had been the location of the Geological Survey Magnetic Observatory since 1909.
