1862: The Colorado River starts rising. Two days later, it rises 3 feet in three hours, reaching its peak on Jan. 23. Fort Yuma becomes an island and Colorado City, now Yuma, is washed away.
1912: Work begins on the El Paso and Southwestern Railroad terminal in Tucson.
1984: An emotional moment of silence precedes the University of Arizona game against Arizona State. Just four days after his father ā Malcolm Kerr, president of American University in Beirut ā is assassinated, Steve Kerr scores 12 points in a 71-49 win over the Sun Devils at McKale Center.
