DOUGLAS — Ray Borane, the mayor of this Southern Arizona border city for a dozen years, plans to step down when his term expires next year, saying he's ready to return to his private life and personal interests.
Borane was a critic of attempts by the Legislature to try to fix Arizona's vast immigration woes and has opposed attempts to build more fences along the U.S.-Mexico border.
He placed an emphasis on strong relations between Douglas and the Mexican city to the immediate south, Agua Prieta. And during Borane's tenure, the University of Arizona also opened a campus in Douglas.
"Although I'm done with public life, you never know. Public life can have a pull on people," Borane told The Daily Dispatch in Douglas. "If something comes along the horizon that appeals to me, I may reconsider my options."
