The Border Patrol's permanent checkpoint on Arizona 90 near Huachuca City opened this week.
The revamped checkpoint has two lanes to speed up traffic, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection. A 65-foot canopy provides safe working conditions for agents, regardless of the weather.
The project cost about $900,000 and was managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers under a permit from the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The checkpoint near Ajo on Arizona 85 is the next to be similarly redesigned, according to Agent Steven Passement, a Border Patrol spokesman.
The Tucson Sector has 11 checkpoints along Southern Arizona highways. The one along I-19 near Tubac is the only other permanent checkpoint.
