Rock star Steve Miller gets a light before performing on Feb. 8, 1977, at the Tucson Community Center. The Steve Miller Band was here to promote its “Fly Like an Eagle” album and 9,000 fans saw the concert that evening. In an interview, Miller said "I don't think I've made my major contributions to music yet, there's still plenty of time for that."

Rock star Billy Idol made an appearance at the Tucson Community Center Arena on May 5, 1987. Opening for Idol that night was The Cult. Among the numbers Idol performed were his renditions of "White Wedding," "Mony, Mony" and "To Be a Lover." According to the Star's reviewer, the nearly 5,000 fans in attendance were treated to a "fast-paced, good-humored and invigorating" concert.

Francisco Ernesto Angel Hernandez and Maria del Refugio Angel tend store at Cut-Rate Grocery, 178 S. Convent, in 1928, now the east entry of the Tucson Convention Center. They owned the store and lived next door. He started the store in the early '20s and also owned a gas station behind the store.

The concrete floor of the new Tucson Community Center arena after it was poured in June and July, 1971. It featured pipes buried within the concrete to keep ice frozen for hockey or skating events. One of the first events at the arena was the Ice Capades in November, 1971.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Tucson's first Hispanic bishop was installed on March 11, 1982, during a ceremony at the Tucson Community Center Arena. Nearly 9,000 church members and friends watched as The Most Rev. Manuel Duran Moreno became the fifth bishop of Tucson. As the grand procession began, Moreno passed through an honor guard of the Asociacion de Charros de Tucson.
