Members of Congress and the President continue to receive their salaries during a government shutdown because of the U.S. Constitution and a permanent appropriation established around 1983. The very people we hired to keep the Government open, will stop doing their job, go home and be paid. Meanwhile professional bureaucrats, some military personnel and other necessary people will continue to work and not be paid.
We've got it backwards; Congress and the President should have their pay stopped and their hours increased.
