How many New Year's Resolutions have you actually accomplished? Perhaps some have stuck with you as you accomplished your goals, and others not so much.

Resolutions seem to be on a task as to who we want to be and who we are right now.

A resolution is like a bridge to the future, but awareness is an anchor in the now. You don't have to choose one over the other, but you can use awareness to fuel your goals.

You can use your resolution as a map, as in a journey, but not as a hard and fast destination. In the end, we find that the resolution is merely a map while awareness is the ground beneath our feet. You can always make a course correction. If you make a mistake today, don't throw the map away; you just missed an exit. Simply find the nearest on- ramp. The nearest on-ramp is always this present moment.

Staying fully present rather than being distracted by future goals or past regrets brings this moment into focus so we don't trip over the immediate reality in front of us. True progress happens when we treat each step we take as the goal itself. This ensures our current actions and choices are handled with intention and care.

Each step we choose in our journey keeps our energy focused on what we can control. For instance, rather than “Lose ten pounds”, practice tasting every bite. When the goal is the sensory experience of the food right now, you naturally stop when full, making the health goal a byproduct of now rather than a future struggle to obtain your goal

Here and now is the only place where true change or progress can actually occur. Let’s not trip over the present moment on our path.
