There are 18 city and nine county public pools in the area. We are going to all of them so we give you a glimpse of what each one is like.
Which ones have shade? Which ones have grass? Do they have slides but only allow certain ages to go on them? We will do the legwork, so you don't have to.
Himmel Pool
Himmel Pool is located in the middle of Himmel Park at 950 N. Tucson Blvd. — between Broadway and Speedway. It's open for the summer season — June through August.
Pools: There are two pools, a foot-and-a-half foot deep wading pool with beach entry and a 25-yard pool which ranges from three-and-a-half to 11 feet deep. The main pool has stair entry.
Hours: Recreational swim is from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and noon to 7 p.m. on Saturdays.
Features: There's a one-meter diving board.
Shade: There is a glorious shaded area with grass. Plus the surrounding park is all grass, so it cools it off a bit. There is no shade over either pool, though.
Seating: There are picnic tables underneath ramadas.
Facilities: There are separate showers and bathrooms for boys and girls.
Condition: The pool area is fairly small, but it's super clean.
Family time: Family swim is from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Kids swim free with adult admission of $2 each.
Kids call: Wading pool and grass makes this a great place for families with small children. It feels like the type of place where everybody would know each other.
Bonus: Himmel Library is located at the park, too. Go grab a book to read before heading to the pool.
Trivia: Himmel Pool was built in 1936 and was originally called the North Side Pool.
