Reserve power for Tucson
Gov. Katie Hobbs on Tuesday toured Tucson Electric Power’s largest local battery energy storage system during a ribbon-cutting event. Roadrunner Reserve, located near Interstate 10 and South Rita Road, is a 200-megawatt battery energy storage system. It can power 42,000 homes for four hours, the utility said.
Tucson Electric Power’s $350 million reserve battery project helped keep the energy on on Aug. 6, when a 111-degree day pushed energy needs about a record hourly demand peak of 2,502 megawatts, utility officials say. A second 200 mega-watt phase under construction is expected to be in service by summer 2026.
