North Fork of the Rio Puerco
In 1979, Church Rock was the site of the largest uranium spill of radioactive waste in United States history. The dam at United Nuclear Corporation's tailings disposal pond breached and spilled more than 1,100 tons of solid radioactive mill waste and 94 million gallons of acidic, radioactive tailings solution into the Puerco River.
