A man was arrested Monday in connection with an attempt to smuggle more than 40 pounds of heroin into the United States through the Nogales port of entry, an official said Thursday.
The incident occurred around 1:15 p.m. when a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer began questioning the driver of a Volkswagen Jetta, according to a news release.
The driver — a Mexican citizen — became visibly nervous and was referred for a more thorough inspection, the release said.
During the search, officers found 24 packages of heroin weighing 47 pounds hidden within compartments of the rear bumper and trunk.
He was arrested and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the release said.
The heroin and the vehicle were seized.
