A former Phoenix resident has been sentenced to death for the murders of two women in the 1990s.
Scott A. Lehr was convicted of the murder charges in separate trials in 1996 and 1997.
His original death sentence was overturned in 2002 when the U.S. Supreme Court determined that only juries, and not judges, could sentence a defendant to death.
The 49-year-old Lehr was found guilty in 1997 for the murders of Margaret Christorf, killed in 1991, and Michelle Morales, killed in 1992. On Tuesday, he received a death sentence for each.
Lehr, a Phoenix resident at the time and father of three, became known as the “Baby Seat” rapist in 1991 and 1992 for his use of a baby seat in his car to lure 10 young girls and women.
Lehr was arrested in June 1992. Victims were able to link Lehr to the attacks through descriptions of his car, partial license-plate numbers and the baby seat.
