A Tucson teacher has been named the Arizona American History Teacher of the Year.
Kate Gilbert teaches eighth-grade social studies at Safford Engineering/Technology Magnet Middle School.
She received the award Oct. 14.
Gilbert has taught at Safford for 17 years, with the exception of a tour in the Peace Corp.
She was recognized because of her creative, innovative approach to American History.
