PHOENIX — Arizona Treasurer Dean Martin’s office says his wife died several hours after giving birth, and their newborn son is in “grave condition.”
Martin’s office says Austin Michael Wright was born at 7:31 p.m. Monday and that 34-year-old Kerry Martin died at 11:53 p.m.
Martin’s office says he was at his son’s bedside Tuesday at an undisclosed hospital.
The child was the first for the couple, who had been married 13 years.
Gov. Jan Brewer said “the collective arms of the people of the state” embrace Martin in his time of loss.
The Arizona House paused for a moment of silence after Speaker Kirk Adams read the announcement by Martin’s office. Another lawmaker then said a prayer.
A former Republican state senator, Martin was elected treasurer in 2006.
