PHOENIX — Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl has been named to the No. 2 Republican leadership post by his colleagues in the Senate.
Kyl ran unopposed for the Minority Whip post and was the unanimous choice of the Senate Republican Conference when they met to vote Thursday morning. He replaces Sen. Trent Lott of Mississippi, who announced last week that he plans to retire before the end of the year.
Kyl says he’s honored to be elected to the post and knows he has big shoes to fill. The 65-year-old was elected to the Senate in 1994 and re-elected in 2000 and 2006. He previously served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The minority whip plays a major role in developing national Republican policies and is responsible for corralling votes from GOP senators to support those policies.
