Presidential elections and transfers of power

At their Morningside Heights home in New York City, under an address plate numbered "1600" -- the number of the White House on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. -- President-elect Dwight D. Eisenhower and first lady-elect, his wife Mamie, end an election night to remember on Nov. 5, 1952, as they wave to about 300 wildly cheering persons who greeted them. Ike and Mamie had just returned from the Hotel Commodore, where Ike addressed a huge throng of enthusiastic supporters after his opponent Gov. Adlai Stevenson conceded the election. Address on the house was rigged up by Columbia students. (AP Photo/Matty Zimmerman)
