It was a grand and impressive station when it opened in 1912. But the passenger depot for the El Paso and Southwestern Railroad would serve the public for only 12 years. It closed its doors in 1924, when the railroad merged with Southern Pacific and depot functions were moved to the Toole Avenue station. Although it sat empty for 66 years, the building at 419 W. Congress St. escaped the wrecking ball. On March 13, 1978, plans were under way to renovate the 11,000-square-foot building and open a restaurant inside. Since its renovation, the site has housed Carlos Murphy's and Garcia's restaurants, and the space has been used for storage and offices.
Tucson Time Capsule is a occasional feature, a photographic record of Tucson as it was.
