Basketry for the Pima Indians is an art form, and it's one that Madeline Lewis took very seriously. She had been taught the skill by her mother and grandmother and was continuing that tradition by teaching the next generation of Pima girls how to weave baskets. Lewis, who had an education degree from UCLA, also taught pottery, beading, how to preserve Indian foods from the desert and the Pima language. She also demonstrated her basketry skills at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument.
