Basis Tucson has been ranked first in the country in the Washington Post's "America's Most Challenging High Schools" list.
University High School ranked No. 34 in the listing and Sonoran Science Academy ranked No. 57.
Post education columnist Jay Mathews, who conducts the ranking, wrote on Friday that this year's top schools were "small magnets and charters that focus on college level courses and tests."
The Post's ranking is based largely on the number of students in a school who take Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests each year.
Earlier this month University High and Basis Tucson were named to the top 10 high schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report.
