It was a time of transition for the store at El Con Mall. It closed as a Goldwaters department store and, after a weekend, opened as a Dillard's. On Feb. 28, 1989, the most obvious remnant of the old retailing company was removed as Jeff Hamilton took down the Goldwaters name. Begun in 1860 by the grandfather of former Sen. Barry Goldwater, Goldwaters was an Arizona family business until 1962. In February 1989, Dillard Department Stores took over the two Tucson Goldwaters locations from May Co.
