Authorities say a World War II-era plane has crashed near the town of Maricopa, about 35 miles south of Phoenix.
Mark Clark of the Pinal County Sheriff's Office said authorities initially confirmed that one person died in the crash of the vintage airplane.
Hours later, the office clarified that although the plane was listed as a single-seat aircraft, "when the wreckage was recovered, a second victim was found. There are now two deceased persons in this crash," Clark said in a news release Friday night.
Victims' identities will be released after family notifications are made, he said.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said preliminary information on the crash indicated the plane was a P-51D Mustang, a type of single-engine American fighter used during World War II.
