The shooter in Highland Park, Illinois, had a troubled past that could have triggered Illinois' red flag laws. Still he was able to amass a large arsenal of weapons and ammunition.
But we shouldn't scrap these imperfect laws.
They rely on family communicating issues with law enforcement and communication amongst law enforcement agencies. When the communication works, the laws can be effective at preventing shootings and deaths.
