The Bryant Bannister Tree-Ring Building at the University of Arizona in Tucson on July 16, 2018. The building is new but the science of dendrochronology has been around a lot longer. The scientific study of tree-rings in the US was formalized in 1937 by the creation of the Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research at the UA. Its founder, Andrew Ellicott Douglass, had already been studying wood 30 years before. At first, it was the nation's only dendrochronology lab, but it helped other programs in th development of other laboratories around the world. A.E. Araiza / Arizona Daily Star
