The SaddleBrooke Writers Group (SWG), established in 1993, is a vibrant community of approximately 40 active members who share a passion for the written word. The group meets regularly on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Catalina Room, located at 38735 S. Mountain View Boulevard. All writers—regardless of experience level—are welcome to join. The annual membership fee is only $10.

In 2026, SWG launched a new initiative to support its members’ growth by offering quarterly workshops focused on core writing craft and the practical realities of publishing. These workshops are designed to deepen skills, demystify the writing and publishing process, and provide actionable guidance writers can immediately apply to their work.

The first workshop, The Realities of Publishing, was held on January 31 and was led by SWG member and professional editor Gail Kerzner, founder of The Savvy Red Pen (thesavvyredpen.com). The session addressed common myths and realities of publishing, strategies for book production and launch, various publishing paths, the role of the publishing team, and what it means to be an effective “authorpreneur”—balancing the creative role of author with the strategic mindset of an entrepreneur.

Eighteen participants attended the workshop and were impressed by Gail’s depth of knowledge and practical approach. Attendees gained new insights that will help them avoid common pitfalls in writing, production, distribution, and launch. Gail outlined how publishing paths differ based on a writer’s goals for speed, control, credibility, and budget. She clearly explained the distinctions among traditional, self-publishing, and hybrid publishing models. Participants also learned about large and small publishing houses and agencies, including the advantages, disadvantages, and costs associated with each.

The workshop was highly interactive and engaging, incorporating hands-on activities, visual callouts, and games that enhanced the adult learning experience and encouraged lively discussion.

The next workshop, focusing on Memoir, Essay, and Literary Nonfiction, is scheduled for April 11. Gail Kerzner has generously volunteered to lead this session as well, drawing on her extensive experience as an editor working within the nonfiction genre.

Additional workshops for SWG members are planned for July and October and will be led by SWG members. July’s workshop will explore Process, Mindset, and Habit, while October’s session will focus on Core Craft (Fiction & Narrative Prose).

Through this new workshop series, the SaddleBrooke Writers Group continues its long-standing commitment to fostering both creative growth and practical expertise among its members. By combining professional insight, peer-led learning, and a supportive community environment, SWG is creating meaningful opportunities for writers to strengthen their craft, clarify their goals, and move forward with confidence. Whether members are writing for personal fulfillment or pursuing publication, the 2026 workshops reflect SWG’s dedication to helping every writer’s voice develop and thrive.
