In early January, Mother Nature decided to make her presence known in the form of rain; enough rain that the years’ first two Men’s Preserve/MountainView Golf Association (MPMGA) tournaments had to be cancelled. I wonder why anyone was really interested in golf on New Year’s Day, what with all those great football games on tv. Besides, playing golf while nursing a hangover isn’t much fun.

The rest of January looks to be much more accommodating, weatherwise. Two major tournaments are on tap; the Member-Member Match Play event and the Javelina Cup. The Member-Member Tournament is played over three days and pits two-man teams against each other until one team in each flight is left standing. The Javelina Cup is HOA-1 versus HOA-2. This event is supposed to be competitive, but I think the MPMGA team has won for the last 150 years or so. HOA-1 probably only shows up for lunch (and of course beer). The only thing in HOA-1’S favor is that I am playing for HOA-2.

In next month’s Saddlebag Notes, I hope to have results from some of these tournaments, Mother Nature willing.
