Thoughts of Hawaii suggest the feel of ocean breezes and sounds of the surf. When the MountainView Lady Putters (MVLP) blend together thoughts of Hawaii with goofy golf in the Saddlebrooke high desert, unexpected entertainment awaits. On Monday, August 11, when the temperature was near 100 with no ocean breeze—or even a mountain breeze—and no sound of the surf, MVLP’s Goofy Golf Committee provided an added dose of fun to Monday morning putting. Women putters appeared in Hawaiian dresses, grass skirts, coconut bras or their best interpretation of Hawaiian attire to get in the spirit of the event.
Committee members had been hard at work to set up the MountainView putting green with obstacles and putting challenges. If you are a right-handed golfer, pick up the left-hand putter. Then take a turn putting with a plastic toy golf club or a pool noodle and hitting a wiffle ball or a wobbly golf ball. If these challenges were not enough fun, the obstacles provided more entertainment. Tee off from atop a plastic cup or putt around an unmovable flock of pink flamingos. Fortunately for the serious putters, scores were not recorded toward handicaps. The sound of laughter heard around the putting green affirmed the ladies were out for fun and camaraderie and not the best scores.
Under the guidance of Board Member and Event Advisor Pam Smith, Goofy Golf Committee members, who deserve a great round of applause, are Lorie Bolme (Chairperson), Sharon Anderson, Kimberly Berg, Patty Siniscalchi, Diane Mazzarella, Marilyn Ginther and Sherry Kaplan.
The monthly business meeting and luncheon, which followed in the MountainView Ballroom, provided a Three-Par salad, entertainment by Jo Ann Wilbour at the piano, door prizes, and announcement of the July putting awards. Kathy Warren received the Lou Ann Garvin Tiger of the Month Award (lowest net 32.2), and Pam Smith was awarded the Hole in Wonder Award (most holes in one - 9). A unique three-way tie for the Road Runner Award for lowest gross of 37.3 went to Kay Tomaszek, Marcia Munich and Pam Smith.
Linda Evans, Charity Committee Co-Chairperson announced the fundraising goal of $2,000 for the Mammoth-San Manuel United School district has been reached. These funds will provide new Pre-K graduation caps and gown. Linda then challenged MVLP members to reach a goal of $2,500 before the October deadline to provide additional funding for the “Teacher Educational Fund” and “Middle School Life Skills Training”. As of early August, only $143 was needed to reach that goal. Can MVLP reach even higher before October?
SaddleBrooke ladies who are looking to liven up their Monday mornings are invited to join MV Lady Putters any time. No golf experience is necessary. For more information, visit mvlputters.com.
