Las Vegas Aces' bond on and off the court leads to success

  • DOUG FEINBERG Associated Press
  • Updated Jul 6, 2026

The Las Vegas Aces continued their dominant run through the first part of the season with convincing wins over New York and Connecticut last week to move to 15-1. That's the best start since the 2016 Los Angeles Sparks went 20-1 en route to the championship. Las Vegas is winning by an average of 15.6 points a game and still sits atop the AP WNBA power poll. Minnesota's Napheesa Collier averaged 26.7 points, nine rebounds and 2.3 blocks to help the Lynx win all three of their games last week.

Sky competitive after massive changes following 2021 WNBA title

  • DOUG FEINBERG Associated Press
  • Updated Jul 6, 2026

Chicago has had massive roster changes since winning its first championship two years ago. Kahleah Copper is the lone starter remaining from that team as Candace Parker, Courtney Vandersloot, Azura Stevens and Allie Quigley are all gone. Copper has embraced the challenge of her new leadership role and has gotten off to a strong start this year in helping the Sky win four of their first seven games. She is averaging a career-best 17.1 points and 5.9 rebounds.

Griner gets warm welcome in first home game since being detained

  • JOHN MARSHALL Associated Press
  • Updated Jul 6, 2026

Brittney Griner shined in first regular-season home game since being detained for nearly 10 months in a Russian prison. The Phoenix Mercury center finished with 27 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots, but the Mercury lost 75-69 to the Chicago Sky. The loss came after a rousing welcome home from Mercury fans. Just before player introductions, a poet paid tribute to Griner while being surrounded by the Mercury’s dancers.
