LOS ANGELES — Rod Dedeaux, who coached Southern California to a record 11 NCAA baseball titles and turned out a parade of future major-leaguers, died Thursday. He was 91.
Dedeaux, who coached the Trojans for 45 years before retiring in 1986, died of complications from a stroke he had Dec. 2, the school said.
Nearly 60 USC players under Dedeaux went on to big league careers, including Mark Mc-Gwire, Randy Johnson and Tom Seaver.
Dedeaux had a record of 1,332-571-11.

Browne shoots 69, leads in PGA opener
KAPALUA, Hawaii — Olin Browne waited six years before getting back to the winners-only Mercedes Championships, and played Thursday as if he doesn't want to wait that long again.

Browne was the only player to break 70 in blustery conditions at Kapalua and finished with a 4-under 69 to take a one-shot lead over Vijay Singh as the PGA Tour season began without some of its biggest stars.
Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen decided to take the week off, leaving a 28-man field to tackle a Plantation course that played long and soft, and deceptive because of its new greens.
Only nine players managed to break par.
"I'm thrilled to be here," Browne said. "I would like to play well enough to be invited back. And there's only one way to get back."
His 69 matched the highest score to lead after the first round in the eight years the Mercedes Championships has been played at Kapalua. Jesper Parnevik also had a 69 in 2000.

Tucsonan reaches Copper semifinals
Fourth-seeded Shane Foster of Tucson advanced to the boys 14 semifinals Thursday in the Copper Bowl Championships.
Foster, who defeated Chris Camillone of Austin, Texas, 6-3, 7-6 (4) in Thursday's quarterfinal, will face top seed Sekou Coker Bangoura of Bradenton, Fla., today at 9 a.m. at Hilton El Conquistador Resort.
Tucson's Cameron Ahari, top-seeded in the boys 16s, was upset in the quarters by seventh-seeded Dillon Pottish of East Quogue, N.Y., 7-5, 6-2.
● In Hong Kong, Kim Clijsters edged Zheng Jie and Venus Williams overcame an injury to beat Sania Mirza at the Champions Challenge exhibition tournament.
Clijsters rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win. Williams, who tweaked her back in her first match in four months, won 6-3, 6-3.
Williams will face top-ranked Lindsay Davenport in the semifinals, and Clijsters will play Russia's Elena Dementieva.
● In Gold Coast, Australia, Martina Hingis won her third consecutive match since returning from a three-year retirement, beating Nuria Llagostera Vives 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 in the quarterfinals of the Australian women's hardcourt championships.
● In Auckland, New Zealand, top-seeded Nadia Petrova advanced to the semifinals of the ASB Women's Classic with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kristina Brandi.
Second-seeded Daniela Hantuchova advanced by beating qualifier Tzipora Obziler 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in a marathon match.
● In Doha, Qatar, Roger Federer advanced to the semifinals of the Qatar Open with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Marcos Baghdatis. Federer will meet Tommy Haas, who beat Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 6-3.

NASCAR Hall sites narrowed to three
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR has narrowed the possible sites for its first official Hall of Fame to Atlanta, Charlotte or Daytona Beach, Fla., and expects to pick a winning city by the end of March.
The decision eliminates Richmond, Va., and Kansas City., Kan., from consideration.

Coach to go to court over suspension
ELIZABETHTOWN, N.Y. — U.S. skeleton coach Tim Nardiello will get his day in court Monday, when the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation has been ordered to show that it had good reason to suspend him while sexual harassment allegations are investigated.
The order called for the hearing and ordered federation president Jim Shea Sr. to show cause to keep the court from granting a injunction that would reinstate Nardiello.

Adu attends camp for national team
CARSON, California — Teenager Freddy Adu is among 28 players who reported this week to the national team's first training camp of the year.
The 16-year-old, who had never been invited to practice with the national team before, ran and went through shooting drills Thursday during the first full day of workouts. He is considered a long shot to make the 23-man World Cup roster.

The UA men's and women's swimming teams will face Washington today at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center at 2 p.m.

Club hockey
Icecats lose tourney game to Iowa State
The No. 12 Arizona Icecats club hockey team lost 3-1 to No. 6 Iowa State in the Desert Classic in Scottsdale on Thursday.
Tim Wochok scored the Icecats' goal to tie the game at 1 in the second period.
The Icecats (10-6) play Penn State at 4 p.m. today at Alltel Ice Den in Scottsdale.
