The Mariachi Divas made national television earlier this month.
Dressed in traditional trajes with baby blue scarves, the multicultural all-woman ensemble performed a blend of classic and original works as openers for Sen. Hillary Clinton during a presidential campaign stop in Los Angeles.
Their performance was shown live across the country as part of C-SPAN’s “Road to the White House” series. Divas leader Cindy Shea said she was impressed at the star power the event managed to generate.
“I have a home in Burbank so I see celebrities all the time,” said Shea, who brings the group to the new Desert Diamond Monsoon Nightclub on Saturday. “But it was fun seeing them together in one place. We were warming up and Magic Johnson, Sally Field and Ted Danson all walked right by us.”
That’s just the way things go for the Divas these days. After nine years of blazing brass and strings, the group has moved beyond the struggling mariachi band persona, hitting many of the national conferences and making a few high-powered friends along the way.
