A mass shooting in downtown Tucson that left nine people critically injured has been turned over to the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team.
The team was created in 2022 to have an independent law enforcement agency take the lead in criminal investigations of critical incidents involving member agencies. In this case, while the shooting happened downtown — in the Tucson Police Department's jurisdiction — the suspect was shot by a responding TPD officer.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has been named the lead investigating agency for the shooting, which occurred Sunday around 2 a.m., though a number of other agencies are part of the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team: Oro Valley Police, Marana Police, Pascua Yaqui Police, Sahuarita Police, University of Arizona Police, Pima Community College Police, South Tucson Police, and the Tucson Airport Authority Police.

The Sheriff's Department will present its findings to the Pima County Attorney's Office.
Independent of that investigation, the Tucson Police Department will conduct its own investigation into whether any policy violations occurred during the incident.
No information about the officer who fired or the suspect was released Sunday.
The shooting occurred after a confrontation between two groups broke out in the 100 block of East Congress. The nine victims were primarily shot in their extremities, Tucson police said.
Officers patrolling nearby ran to the area to render aid to the victims and encountered the suspect in the process.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was shot after being given repeated commands, TPD said. He was taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition.
