Nine people were critically injured, and a man was taken into custody in a shooting in downtown Tucson early Sunday morning.
According to Tucson police, the shooting occurred around 2 a.m. outside of a business in the 100 block of East Congress, near Sixth Avenue, where a number of people had gathered. A confrontation broke out between two groups, resulting in gunfire.

Upon hearing the gunshots, officers patrolling the area ran over. A suspect running from the scene was given multiple commands before he was shot by an officer.
The suspect was taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition, along with the victims, all of whom were adults. No officers were injured.
Tucson police said the victims' injuries were "primarily to their extremities," and officers rendered aid before Tucson Fire arrived.

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero described the shooting as "another serious and senseless act of gun violence," praising the quick action and care provided by Tucson fire and police.
"As we all know too well, the impact resulting from this act of gun violence reaches beyond the scene and the victims," she said. "It affects all of us: family and friends, first responders, the witnesses, our entire community. We know these moments leave a lasting impression on us and our sense of safety."
Romero called for action from lawmakers, saying "easy access to guns and Arizona’s weak gun safety laws have continued to put all of us at risk."

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in Tucson during a meet-and-greet with constituents, also weighed in.
“I’m heartbroken to learn that nine people were shot early this morning in downtown Tucson,” she said. "Too many lives have been changed forever because of America’s gun violence crisis, in my hometown and across the nation.
“Mark and I are grateful for the bravery of Tucson’s first responders as we await more information and hold all those impacted in our hearts.”
The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is investigating the incident, as is standard in shootings in which officers are involved. The Tucson Police Department will conduct its own investigation focused on whether any policy violations occurred.
