Rope and string can be made from many different things.
That's what children learned at Saturday's Sonoran Desert Kids Club gathering at Agua Caliente Regional Park, 12325 E. Roger Road.
The kids listened, watched and created as guest speaker Jesus Garcia, education specialist from the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, helped them spin and twist fibers from desert plants such as agave and other readily available materials such as paper towels, creating different types of ropes, cords and strings.
The hands-on demonstrations included smashing agave leaves to get to the fiber inside, using tools to spin string and wetting paper towels to make them easily twistable.
The Sonoran Desert Kids Club welcomes children ages 8 to 12 to join and take part in educational nature activities from 9:30 a.m. to noon the second Saturday of every month at the park.
