I used to be a newspaper snob. I read the Washington Post during the “heyday” of journalism and a nadir of national politics — Watergate. Returning to Boston, I found the Globe to be a mere shadow of the journalism I had been steeped in for eight years. So I supplemented with the New York Times.
Now in Tucson for more than 20 years, I read the Star. Not like some of my friends who read only the New York Times and decry the paucity of good local reporting. Ironically, many of them profess: think globally and act locally! Then, why not support the Arizona Daily Star!
I send the Star kudos for both local and national advocacy. First, for being the chief sponsor of the amazing Tucson Book Festival! Second, for the Star’s depth of insight and national research into its comprehensive report on the Foster Care System. Now, who is going to take up the gauntlet tendered by the Star and put their professed credos into action?
