A Tucson dog will be heading home soon, after he was found last week running down a street in Howard, Wisconsin, two months after he went missing.
"A woman saw him and picked him up, thinking it was her son's dog," said Lori Nachtwey of the Bay Area Humane Society in Green Bay.
When the good Samaritan took a closer look, she realized it wasn't her son's Yorkshire Terrier and called the shelter, Nachtwey said.
Upon scanning the dog for a microchip, shelter staff learned the dog's name was Nicholas and his owner lived in Tucson — more than 1,800 miles away.
"She said she didn't leave town and she wasn't vacationing in Wisconsin," Nachtwey said of the dog's owner. "The last the owner knew, her dog was playing in the back yard, and he was gone when she went out to get him."

The owner, who could not be reached for comment, didn't know if Nicholas had gotten out from under the fence or if someone had taken him, Nachtwey said.
Weighing less than 10 pounds, the dog was cold when he was brought to the shelter, but looked well taken care of, according to Nachtwey.
After the Humane Society reached the owner, a flight was booked for Nicholas to fly back to Tucson.
"We went to the airport and checked, but it was too cold to fly him out in the cargo area," Nachtwey said.
With no immediate sign of the cold weather letting up, Nachtwey said it sounds like the owner is planning to fly to Milwaukee, about two hours from Green Bay, where a staff member would meet her with Nicholas.
The plan, for now, is for the pair to be reunited next weekend.
