Former postal carrier sentenced for not delivering mail to Gretna apartment complex

The sentence, imposed Thursday by U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Nelson against 38-year-old Kevin Radik of Omaha, comes after the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General began investigating him earlier this year.

The inspector general’s office began the investigation after receiving reports that Radik was not delivering the weekly ads and newspapers to an apartment complex along his route, according to a press release from acting U.S. Attorney Susan Lehr’s office in Nebraska.

The release said investigators saw Radik on video moving a postal bin from a postal vehicle to his personal car. Court documents show that 20 pieces of mail were found in Radik’s car after he consented to investigators searching his vehicle.

Lehr’s office said that Radik admitted that he had not been delivering the bulk of business mail to the apartment complex since last December or January. Radik had worked as a postal carrier in Gretna since 2009.

Instead, Radik would throw the mail away in a dumpster. Lehr’s office said Radik had intended to also throw away the mail that was found in his car. Radik said not delivering the mail saved him five minutes on his route, according to the press release.
