John Dillinger was jailed in northern Indiana after his capture in Tucson. He escaped several weeks later on March 3, 1934.
On June 22 of the same year (Dillinger's 31st birthday), federal agents labeled him "Public Enemy No. 1." He was the first to be placed at the top of the government's most-wanted list. The feds also posted a $10,000 reward for Dillinger, dead or alive.
Exactly a month later, on July 22, Anna Sage, Polly Hamilton and Dillinger strolled into Chicago's Biograph Theater to see "Manhattan Melodrama."
Myrna Loy, Dillinger's favorite actress, played a women caught between a gangster (played by Clark Gable) and a lawman (William Powell).
Federal agents shot and killed Dillinger as he left the theater.
The Biograph Theater still stands. Designated a Chicago landmark in 2001, it's now the home of Victory Gardens Theater.
