Making reading fun for children is one of the best ways to raise a reader.
There are lots of ways to make it fun — making funny voices for the different characters, taking turns reading, letting kids pick out the books.
But why not mix it up a little and get out of the house to read? There are several places around town that host free story-time events for different age groups of children. They give kids the chance to hear a story, to socialize and, in some cases, make a craft related to the story.
Story time also gives Mom and Dad a bit of socialization with other adults, as well.
Here’s a roundup of story-time events taking place this week:
Monday
Cover to Cover is a family literacy program held at different libraries, parks and schools by Make Way for Books. Events include interactive story time and literacy activities. It’s geared toward children up to 8 years old, and every child gets to take home a free book. Monday’s event will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the Valencia Library, 202 W. Valencia Road. 594-5390.
