It’s a new year, with fresh opportunities for local nonprofits to attain grants that support their work from local foundations.
The Marshall Foundation, which has awarded more than than $25 million to almost 1,000 nonprofits, will open its 2024 Grant Round Tuesday Jan. 23, and will accept Letters of Interest (LOIs) online at MarshallFoundation.com through 11:59 p.m on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
The foundation, which has also funded 1,000 scholarships to students at the University of Arizona, offers $25,000-plus in annual funding according to Marshall Foundation Grant Managing Administrator Kay Hoenig.
“We are specific in that we fund projects, programs and nonprofits that serve education in Pima County. LOIs will be accepted from educational institutions and other nonprofits in Pima County that support education from early childhood through grade 16 and wrap-around services that support education for underserved students and we encourage nonprofits that fill these roles to apply,” Hoenig said.

Recipients in 2023 included several colleges at the University of Arizona, the Pride of Arizona Marching Band, and the African American Museum. Other beneficiaries included Arizona Friends of Foster Children, Boys to Men, Job Path, Laptops for Learning, Old Pueblo Community Services, and Sahuarita Food Bank.
The Community Foundation for Southern Arizona (CFSA), which has distributed more than $230 million since 1980, also offers funding through numerous Grant Programs. Various programs are currently accepting applications to regional nonprofits that address animal welfare, arts and culture, community development, education, health and human services, the environment and more.
“We want nonprofits to know the funding is available and how to apply, and we often do information sessions for prospective grantees as well,” said Jenny Flynn, President and CEO of the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona.
Diverse Grant Programs include the Nonprofit Solar Project, which offers local nonprofits the opportunity to meet a portion of energy needs through solar power; and the Local News Initiative, which is dedicated to supporting organizations that provide communities access to local reporting, essential news and reliable civic information.
Another program, the LGBTQ+ Alliance Fund, has awarded more than $1.2 million to 76 organizations in support of Southern Arizona’s LGBTQ+ initiatives. This year, the fund will offer multi-year grants for the first time; applications are due at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13. Go to https://cfsaz.org/grants/lgbtq-alliance-fund/ to get more information.
“When possible, we have incorporated multi-year funding into our strategy based on feedback from our nonprofit partners. If you are a nonprofit, a lot of effort goes into raising annual funding, so if you know you have a consistent revenue source, you can focus more on long-term planning and providing services that benefit the community you serve,” Flynn said.
