Downtown Tucson mass shooting: Here's what we know

At the time of the incident French was serving a four-year probation term for a 2024 aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, court records show.

"A TPD officer courageously engaged the suspect and stopped the violence," Tucson Police Chief Monica Prieto said Monday in a news release about the shooting. The name of the officer who shot and wounded French at the scene of the 2 a.m. mass shooting has not been released. 

In updates late Monday afternoon, Prieto also said:

• "All of the victims are continuing to recover, with many of them already released from the hospital."

• "At the time of the shooting, the Downtown District was staffed with 20 uniformed officers, 5 uniformed sergeants, and 2 community service officers. There has been, and will continue to be, a substantial and highly visible TPD presence in Downtown Tucson for the safety of our community."

Here's what else Tucson police have said so far about the mass shooting:

• It occurred around 2 a.m. outside of a business in the 100 block of East Congress, near Sixth Avenue. A confrontation broke out between two groups of people who had gathered there, resulting in gunfire.
• Officers patrolling the area heard the shots and ran over. A suspect running from the scene, later identified as French, was given multiple commands before he was shot by an officer. 
• The suspect sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.
• The nine victims were all adults. Their injuries were "primarily to their extremities," and officers rendered aid before Tucson Fire arrived. Fire department personnel listed the victims' conditions as critical as they took them to a hospital.  
• No officers were injured.
• Information on the officer who fired was not immediately available.
• The Pima Regional Critical Incident Team is investigating the incident, as is standard in shootings in which officers are involved. 
• Police are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to call 88-CRIME, the anonymous tip line, and reference Pima County Sheriff’s Department case number 260719048.
