Ahoy! The Civano Micro Yachting Association is on the move. The group has had two meetings, one breakfast and two well-attended sailing regattas (that's sailor talk for "floatin' your boat").
As a result of some publicity this summer, the club has increased its membership to 12. Almost half of the members have sailed either micro yachts or the real McCoy. The other half are "motivated."
Since most of the new members live outside Civano, the group decided to change its name to Pima Micro Yacht Club.
At its last meeting, the group took the big step of selecting its "preferred" club boat. This is the boat the club will encourage both entry-level skippers and more experienced racing-type skippers to use or purchase. After much discussion, the Victoria was selected to be our "primary" sailboat; the Soling, the "secondary" boat; and any long-keeled boats will be for the real speed folks.

The Victoria is a very popular 30.7-foot long, 4.5-pound, 43-inch tall out-of-box, ready-to-go boat, and costs approximately $176 - complete with full electronics. It can be in the water with about 10 hours of assembly time.
There is a wealth of information about this American Model Yachting Association-sanctioned little beauty on the Internet. Check it out at http://theamya.org/boats/victoria
The club also discussed establishing a specific sailing day, time and location. Participating does not require having a boat. Note: It's a lot more fun to crash someone else's boat.
One or more individuals will be sailing on the east side of Lakeside Pond at 1 p.m. every Wednesday, rain or shine. It's a 10-minute drive from Civano. We'll plan to spend a little time talking about some basic concepts of sailboating and traditional "sailor talk" terminology.
Annual dues will be $10 (you will probably spend that much at Starbucks on your way to the pond).
Join us on Wednesdays with or without a boat. For more information call Bill Brown at 647-9275.
In addition, if you love model boats but are not particularly interested in sailboats, the club has a project for you: It's looking for someone with an electrically powered radio-controlled boat that could serve as a "tug boat" for hauling disabled sailboats back to shore.
