As a retired social worker and a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I am encouraged by the media attention to the widespread issue of sexual abuse, harassment, rape, and intimidation that is rampant in our society. It is not a new problem, but, finally, victims are speaking out. Victim-blaming and being accused of lying adds to their pain.
One innovative group, Esperanza Dance Project, is dedicated to spreading awareness, supporting survivors, and creating positive change in our community. Their mission is to eradicate stigma, secrecy, and shame associated with being abused by presenting music/dance/ narrative programs to youth and community at local high schools. One performance is being held at Rincon/University High School this Thursday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. See their website for details.
BELIEVE THE VICTIMS TO HELP STOP THE ABUSE.
