ceremony on Wednesday, May 30 at 4 p.m. at Gilbert High School.
Arizona state senator Warren Petersen, a supporter of school choice,
will deliver the keynote address to more than 100 AZVA graduates.
“Congratulations to the Arizona Virtual Academy Class of 2018 for
reaching this significant milestone,” Petersen said. “Congratulations
should also go to the graduates’ parents and families who have supported
these students’ academic growth. We look forward to seeing the great
things to come from this impressive group.”
Nearly half of this year’s graduating class will graduate with honors,
and two students – William Badger and Micaela Zachmeier – were named
National Merit Finalists.
William Lampman, the valedictorian of AZVA’s Class of 2018, will address
his classmates. Lampman plans to study plant sciences and wildlife
conservation at the University of Arizona on a Wildcat Excellence
Scholarship. He is a transgender male who has been active within
Phoenix’s LGBTQ community. Salutatorian Hannah Frey is president of
AZVA’s National Honors Society chapter. She plans to attend Colorado
School of Mines with multiple scholarships to study computational and
applied mathematics.
Dr. Brandi Maynard from K12’s leadership team, and Brianna Manier,
president of AZVA’s student government, will also speak at the
commencement ceremony.
Collectively, AZVA’s Class of 2018 reports that it has been offered more
than $1.1 million in college scholarships. Graduates report that they
have been accepted to colleges and universities across the country,
including Arizona State University, Baylor University, Colorado State
University, Creighton University, Georgia Tech, Hofstra University,
Indiana University, Northern Arizona University, Texas A&M, University
of Tennessee, University of Texas, University of Washington, University
of Wyoming and Washington State University. In addition, two students
plan to join the military.
AZVA provides students statewide in kindergarten through 12th grade with
a learning environment that works for them. The range of classes,
extracurricular activities and supportive community give students of all
abilities and backgrounds the chance to thrive.
Students choose online school for a variety of reasons, including a safe
learning environment, advanced learning options and the ability to
support extracurricular pursuits or medical needs.
