Gas prices closed out 2014 at multi-year lows thanks to plunging oil prices, according to AAA Arizona.
The average price of a gallon of regular gas in Arizona fell another 9.3 cents this week to $2.18 on Wednesday.
Nationwide, prices shed 9.6 cents to $2.26.
Tucson’s average price of $2.09 was 11.4 cents lower than last week, AAA said. Peoria and Flagstaff had the state’s lowest and highest state fuel averages at $2.02 and $2.58 per gallon respectively.
The average price of gas in Arizona is at its lowest since mid-2009.
Record U.S. production combined with lower than expected global demand have pushed down Arizona fuel prices for 86 straight days, noted Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona.

Arizona drivers are ending the year paying $1.03 per gallon less than they were at the start of 2014, according to AAA.
The most common fuel price in Arizona is $1.999 per gallon and nearly 70 percent of the state’s fuel stations are selling regular for $2.25 or less, while nearly 35 percent of stations are selling gas at or less than $2 per gallon.
Some Arizona fuel highlights of 2014:
- Arizona’s 2014 average fuel price was $3.27, almost 13 cents less than its 2013 average fuel price of $3.40.
- The state’s highest fuel price this year was $3.59 on July 9, 16.5 cents less than the 2013 high fuel price of $3.75 and about 50 cents less than the state’s all-time high fuel price of $4.09 in July 2008.
- Arizona’s lowest average fuel price for the year was Wednesday’s state average of $2.18. That’s 85.7 cents less than Arizona’s 2013 low fuel price of $3.034.
- Arizona motorists saw pump prices drop more than they saw them climb in 2014. The statewide average rose 22 weeks, and fell 30 weeks.
