Workers trained in Tucson
Northwest Airlines trained at least 500 replacement workers in Tucson this summer, according to local hoteliers. The replacement workers arrived in Tucson the first week of June.
According to Northwest's strike contingency plan, obtained by several news organizations including the Arizona Daily Star, the Tucson training was to be completed Aug. 8. Ed Foster, vice president of operations for the Radisson Hotel City Center at 181 W. Broadway, said Northwest asked him to extend the stays of 160 replacement workers through Sept. 27.
Northwest spokesperson Tracy Carlson would not comment on why the workers were staying on.
Replacements packed the Radisson's conference rooms this summer using laptops to study for Federal Aviation Administration certification exams. The strike contingency plan scheduled the replacements for 24 hours of hands-on training at Evergreen Air Center in Marana.
