Tucson City Council’s search to find a successor to fired city manager Mike Hein is coming down to two options.
The first is to keep Interim City Manager Mike Letcher past his planned November retirement.
The second option is to launch a national search to find a replacement before Letcher’s planned retirement in November. That’s a tall order to achieve in six months, especially because of the council elections in November.
And it means a new manager wouldn’t know for sure who his or her bosses would be when taking the job.
Option one is favored by the council members who lost the 4-3 vote in early April to fire city manager Mike Hein.
Option two is favored by Councilwoman Karin Uhlich and Councilwoman Regina Romero, although they have nice things to say about Letcher as well. Councilman Steve Leal and Councilwoman Shirley Scott, who also voted to fire Hein did not return phone calls this week.

A local replacement without a search is not completely out of the question — although the Arizona Daily Star contacted most of the locals rumored to be possible replacements and they said they either had not been contacted or weren’t interested in the job.
