PHOENIX - Arizona State University will throw its name in the hat to host one of the 2008 presidential debates.
The university hosted one of three debates in the last presidential election between President Bush and Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.
"We're in the process now, along with many other universities across the country, in putting in a bid similar to the bid we put in and received four years ago," said Colleen Jennings-Roggensack, executive director of ASU Public Events.
The application is due in March, and it's a competitive process. But university officials hope decision-makers remember the university's success in 2004.
Jennings-Roggensack, co-chair of the 2004 presidential debate, said Arizona is a perfect candidate for a presidential debate.
"A lot of the issues they will debate are impacted here _ border issues, the economy, growing cities, the environment," she said.

Tempe Mayor Hugh Hallman said the entire state benefited when the university hosted the 2004 debate.
"The debate heightened our communities' awareness of the political issues involved in the presidential election," Hallman said. "That, in my view, is valuable to a community beyond the economic impact on this region."
