For years, Cholla High Magnet School Principal Frank Armenta has worked to offer a rigorous academic experience to students on Tucson’s southwest side.
But what some may not know is the longtime educator can bust a move — moves that have now been seen by the student body and thousands of others online as part of a principal dance contest.
Aside from bragging rights, the winning campus will receive a free prom next spring from High School Nation, which works to support music and arts programs.
Armenta’s moves, which included the Running Man and the arm wave, were caught on tape this spring when High School Nation made a stop at Cholla, putting on a music and arts festival and donating $10,000 in brand new music equipment and supplies.
Of the 25 campuses High School Nation toured in the spring, with each principal being given an opportunity to show off their skills, only 10 were were named finalists.

The public is now encouraged to weigh in, casting a vote for the school of their choice through June 21.
“You can really tell how much they care about their students from their willingness to go all out with their dance moves in front of so many teachers and teens,” said Jimmy Cantillon, founder of High School Nation.
The free prom will include special guest performers and other memorable moments, Cantillon said.
Armenta is up against principals from California, Las Vegas, and two school leaders from the Phoenix-area.
